Your resume is one of the most important tools you have when looking for a job. It’s your opportunity to show potential employers what you have to offer, and it can make or break your chances of getting an interview. Here are our top five tips for building an effective resume that will help you stand out from the competition!
Resumes should be one page. This may seem like a daunting task, but it’s important to remember that your resume is a snapshot of your experience and skills, not an autobiography. Be concise and clear in your language, and focus on the most relevant information for the job you’re applying for.
List out large achievements below your employment history and education. Your resume should highlight your successes, so make sure they’re front and center! Employers are looking for candidates who have a track record of success, so don’t be afraid to brag a little bit. This can include projects that went successfully at work, research projects from school, and even personal achievements if they show dedication and hard work.
Personal objective statements are helpful. A lot of resumes these days forego the personal objective statement in favor of a “clean look”, but we believe that including a personal objective can be helpful. It’s a great opportunity to sum up who you are as a professional and what your goals are, in just a few short sentences. It gives an opportunity for the hiring team to see who you are and how you might be driven.
Use adjectives in your descriptions. Resumes should be positive and upbeat, so use language that reflects that! Instead of simply listing out your duties at previous jobs, describe how you excelled in those roles using positive adjectives. An example of this would be instead of saying “managed a team of customer service representatives,” you could say “successfully led a team of high-performing customer service representatives.”
List as many long term commitments you can throughout the resume. Employers want to see that you’re committed to your chosen field, so list any relevant long-term projects or commitments you have made over the course of your career. This could include anything from professional memberships to volunteer work. If you have made a commitment to furthering your education, be sure to list that as well!
By following these tips, you can be sure that your resume will be one step ahead of the competition! Now get out there and land your dream job!
